Bird fauna - Birding

While dominant habitat type at Can Gio, plantation mangrove, is of relatively low importance for key bird species, the intertidal mudflats, sandbanks, and saltpans at the site are important habitats for migratory waterbirds. Several rare waterbird species have been recorded at the site, including Spoon-billed Sandpiper, Spotted Greenshank, Asian Dowitcher, Spot-billed Pelican and Painted Stork. In addition, the globally endangered, Black-faced Spoonbill has been recorded at the site, although it is not believed to regularly occur in significant numbers.

Recent coastal reclamation projects have cut off access to the tidal mudflats of Can Gio, causing a significant displacement of the region's migratory shorebird populations. Deprived of their primary intertidal feeding grounds, many species have dispersed to surrounding coastal areas. However, the traditional salt pans of the Ly Nhon commune remain a critical ecological refuge, serving as the primary alternative foraging and roosting habitat for the shorebirds that still frequent the area.
