1.    Project Background

The White-eared Night Heron (Gorsachius magnificus) is classified as Endangered (EN) globally and Critically Endangered (CR) in Vietnam. Previous surveys from 2010–2012 identified several nesting sites within Ba Bể National Park and the Na Hang – Lâm Bình Nature Reserve. Since then, updated information on the species' presence has been lacking. PRCF Vietnam seeks to update records on the species, identify active nest sites, and establish a community-led nest protection model.

This proposal outlines a community-based survey and conservation initiative targeting the endangered White-eared Night Heron (Gorsachius magnificus) within two key protected areas in northern Vietnam: Ba Bể National Park (Bắc Kạn Province) and the Na Hang – Lâm Bình Nature Reserve (Tuyên Quang Province). As a species of global and national conservation concern, the White-eared Night Heron has not been recorded in the region since previous surveys conducted between 2010 and 2012. The survey aims to verify its current presence, locate viable nesting sites, and foster local stewardship in protecting nests through inclusive training and awareness efforts. The expected outcomes include updated ecological data, photographic evidence, nest monitoring models, and the foundation of community-led protection groups, contributing to the long-term conservation of this elusive and rare species.

2.    Project Objectives

• Conduct expert-led field surveys to verify presence and nesting activity of the White-eared Night Heron;
• Provide technical guidance on observation methods, nest identification, and data recording;
• Documentation the WENH monitoring and techniques method;
• Support training and engagement of local communities in nest protection; and
• Contribute to a final report summarizing findings and conservation recommendations.
